Top Dollar

After class today I went with some of the other students to check out the Post-War and Contemporary Art soon to be auctioned at Christie's. Ever wanted to buy a Mark Rothko for six million dollars? Now's your chance. There was some really great stuff to see, but it was also weird. There's something about seeing the price estimates listed next to the work that changed my perception a bit. Richard Prince's appropriation of images and text doesn't seem as avant-garde when you realize how much money he's probably making. Also, it was strange to be looking at the work with people who are actually considering buying it, something you don't usually think about in a museum.
